New challenges, real growth, and unexpected lessons—Intern insights series tells the stories of our interns as they begin their careers at UiPath. Meet Mewantha Jayasekara, a UiPath intern whose curiosity about intelligent systems led him into the world of agentic automation. During his internship, he moved beyond traditional workflows to explore how agents, people, and robots collaborate in real enterprise environments. In this post, he shares how UiPath helped turn that curiosity into a hands-on experience shaping the future of automation.

What was it like stepping into UiPath as an intern?

"Internships are often described as learning experiences, but my time at UiPath felt more like an early immersion into how modern automation teams work. From day one, the focus wasn’t just on tools, but on how intelligent automation is reshaping the role of developers and the way enterprises design, build, and operate solutions."

How would you describe your initial days as an intern at UiPath?

"Under the direction of my manager, Tony Nudd—Principal Sales Engineer and Agentic Automation Innovation Lead for APJ, I was exposed to the full lifecycle of enterprise agentic orchestration—from understanding business requirements to designing workflows, handling exceptions, and thinking about scalability and governance. I became familiar with UiPath Studio, UiPath Orchestrator, and cloud-based environments, learning how automation is no longer isolated scripts, but part of a connected system involving people, robots, and AI."

Can you share a key highlight of your work during the internship?

"A key highlight was developing solutions that used AI-powered image analysis and email automation, where structured logic meets probabilistic AI outputs. These projects reinforced the importance of validation, fallback handling, and clear communication—skills that are increasingly critical as automation becomes more intelligent. You can read more about it here."

What’s been your most valuable learning experience during your internship at UiPath?

"One of the most valuable learning experiences was completing the UiPath Maestro™ Case Management Technical Deep Dive (L300) course. This training introduced me to agentic orchestration, a shift away from rigid, linear workflows toward flexible, case-driven processes. I also explored how agentic automation and orchestration are approached at UiPath, where systems collaborate rather than simply execute predefined steps.

Another milestone was completing the UiPath Apps course. It highlights how developers are no longer just backend automation builders. I learned how to create lightweight, interactive applications that sit on top of automations, enabling business users to trigger processes, provide inputs, and monitor outcomes. This bridged the gap between technical automation and user experience."

What stood out most during your internship at UiPath?

"What stood out most during this internship was how much the developer's role is evolving. Design, build, deploy, test, and even UAT (User Acceptance Testing) are no longer strictly manual phases. With AI agents, case management, and orchestration platforms like UiPath Maestro™, developers now design systems that think, adapt, and collaborate.

Rather than replacing developers, this shift raises the bar. It demands professionals who can combine technical skills with system-thinking, communication, and an understanding of how people and AI work together. My experience at UiPath reinforced that the future developer is not just a coder, but an orchestrator of intelligent systems."
