Capgemini Consulting - RPA, the Next Revolution of Corporate Functions

In this whitepaper, Capgemini Consulting considers the ways in which robotic process automation (RPA) can be used as a way to transform and revolutionize a new wave of corporate functions. They suggest that “More than ever, technology reached a tipping point in the optimization of corporate functions. Similar to robotization of production lines in the 90’s, corporate functions are initiating today their robotic transformation/revolution. We believe robotic process automation or RPA is the lever that will take these corporate functions to the next level.”

The three biggest benefits that can be expected from RPA, according to Capgemini Consulting, include:

    • Improved employee and customer satisfaction: RPA software robots will be able to automate the rules-based and repetitive tasks that were previously done by human employees, allowing them to focus on higher value tasks involving customer interaction. Employees often spend up to 80% of their working time performing these menial back-office tasks, a percentage that can be drastically reduced with the implementation of RPA.
  • Accelerated productivity gains: Robots cost less than the typical FTE and ROI can be reached quickly, typically between three and six months. Even better is that RPA can provide a quicker ROI than traditional automation software because implementation does not involve any changes to the underlying IT setup.
  • Enhanced compliance to growing regulation: RPA reduces the amount of errors made and the action taken by the software robot can be traced, ensuring all information required for an audit will be available and transparent. Robots can also be trained to execute reconciliations and run controls on a regular basis.

Now that we’ve considered the benefits of RPA, let’s take a look at the automation journey in order to better understand the implementation process. Here, Capgemini Consulting suggests that the steps that need to be taken are as follows:

    1. Define RPA perimeter and determine the processes to be automated with RPA.
    2. Optimize existing processes and make sure they are running efficiently before the automation is implemented.
    3. Select RPA solution.
    4. Define the required span of control, meaning how much automation is desired or needed.
    5. Study impacts on the Target Operating Model.
    6. Build a deployment planning and create a plan for the implementation process.
